First of all, welcome to Spinach Blog. A growing archive of recipes, info, pictures (and more) for spinach lovers.
Second of all, here is why YOU should start eating spinach. All. The. Time. (Like we do). It doesn't just TASTE good, but it is also good for you. This is probably the most awesome thing about spinach. It would be like chocolate chip cookies that made people healthier. Those don't exist. But healthy spinach does.
Reason #1: NUTRIENTS
Spinach is low in calories (40 per cup) and super high in nutrients. One cup of spinach has over 20 different nutrients -- in significant measures. In every bite of spinach you'll be treating your body with vitamin K, vitamin A, manganese, folate, magnesium, dietary fiber, calcium and protein. (!!!)
Reason #2: ANTIOXIDANTS
I've often questioned what antioxidants are. After doing a (tiny) bit of research, the general consensus is that they are good for you and that they help fight free radicals. Free radicals are bad and can cause tissue damage and cancer. This means that spinach is an ally to the fight against cancer. And even if spinach alone will not eradicate cancer, antioxidants will only do your body good.
Spinach isn't really anti-aging. Nor will it prolong your lifespan. You will still get old. Spinach just prevents you from looking it. Which is still a nice perk for those looking to look their best as long as possible. (Remember, beauty starts from the inside). Spinach is also up there on the list of brain foods and has been found to help protect brain functioning that typically wears with age.
The brighter and greener the leaf, the higher in vitamin C. Vitamin C is the common cold's worst enemy--because it helps get rid off it. Vitamin C is notorious for boosting immunity and keeping you from runny noses, sinus tension, and all the other things we dread about colds.
More than good for the brain, spinach seems to be good for the entire face/head region in general. Zeaxanthin and Lutein are two antioxidants found in high amounts in spinach and are great for eyesight and eye health. The significant levels of vitamin A in spinach are great for healthy skin as they help boost and maintain moisture. This helps your face (and all the rest of your skin) fight against acne, wrinkles, dryness, and psoriasis. It's like eating BB cream.
